Roko’s Basilisk imagines a future superintelligence that punishes people who knew it might exist but did not help bring it into being. The threat is supposed to influence a choice you make now.
In July 2010, a LessWrong user named Roko posted the argument. Its name comes from the mythical basilisk, whose gaze kills. The post was removed. The idea kept looking back.
The premise relies on disputed assumptions about decision theory and acausal blackmail. LessWrong rejects its logic. This is speculative internet lore, not a demonstrated AI threat.
